SOP for the safety of animals and staff:

Safety is a big concern in the zoo; and it is a big concern for Captive animals, Animal Keepers,  Veterinary Health Care team including Veterinarians, and  Visitors.

To maintain the optimal level of safety the standard protocol of safety is followed up in the Tata Steel Zoological Park round the clock i.e. 24 x 7 hours.

At the zoo, there is deployment of Security Guards for 24 hours and they work in three shifts (A, B, and C).  A shift began at 6.00 AM in the morning and end at 2.00 PM, B shift works from 2.00 PM to 10.00 PM and C shift works from 10.00 PM to 6.00 AM of the next day. It means round the clock; there are security personnel on duty who are not only protecting zoo property but also take care of the safety of the animal.  They also take care of the safety of the visitors during the visiting hours (9.00 am to 5.30 pm).  On an average 30 people are deployed as security personnel in the zoo on a daily basis for managing the entire zoo premises.

Two to three animal keepers also patrol to every cage or enclosure in night hours from 09:00 PM to 06:00 AM to have a stock of the animal’s wellbeing. If they find anything wrong or abnormal, report it immediately to the zoo management.

The locking system of the animal houses/enclosures/ night shelters is very special at Tata Zoological Park. This is in a dual mode protection system, where one lock is secured at the main entry by the Animal Keeper of that facility and an additional lock is secured by Security Staff posted at that cage facility, until and unless both locks are open at a time; no enclosure is open.

Animal Keeping Staff, after receiving the keys from the key box of the Security Room in the morning hour, took the responsibility of the animals of their enclosure till 5.30 PM and then he / she handed over the keys back to Security Staff.

Animal handling for the purpose of visitor display; is not allowed in India as per regulations of the Central Zoo Authority; so we do not pet the animal, rather preserve their instinct which may be helpful in their rehabilitation in the wild if required in future. Therefore, it is a challenge to maintain their safety from in-fighting, harsh climate, human imprinting and weather.

We have to maintain the animal enclosure / cell/ kraal/ paddock suitable for the animals to enable them to express their natural behaviour. The animals should enjoy good health with a provision of exercise to fulfil their biological & behaviour needs which are ensured in the zoo.

At the same time the above all animal holding facilities are kept intact, strong enough to with-stand their strength to prevent break /damage and escape.

During the time of introducing the new animals with old stock; we take all preventive measures to avoid in-fight and injury.

Above all, a rapid action team with essential equipment and medicine is always ready to deal with any emergency with regards to the safety of animals and visitors both.
